While the Georgia Southern campus is large – nearly 1000 acres, 20,000+ students – your student will find a place among a number of smaller communities of outstanding professors and friendly and personal environment will provide your student with the individual attention he or she needs for success. At Georgia Southern, your student will experience the best of both a large scale and small feel environment.
Forbes Magazine recently ranked Georgia Southern University as one of America’s Best College, Georgia Southern is making strides in education that exhibits our commitment to improving your student’s college experience.
All of our academic programs are nationally accredited and many are nationally ranked.
And students really get the personal attention they are looking for! Major level courses average 23 students and the overall student to faculty ratio is 22-1.
With thousands of students graduating each semester, what will make your student stand out? The Student Leadership and Civic Engagement office provides many opportunities for students to enhance their degree. In recent years, students reported over 26,000 community service hours committed in the Statesboro community, not to mention the thousands more gained in foreign countries through service-learning trips. Students can also broaden their cultural knowledge and worldly perspective through study abroad.
Combine all of this with the ability to explore over 270 different career paths through career exploration and the addition of 1,500 new jobs to the Career Services database each year and your student is sure to find the job they are looking for. Georgia Southern not only offers your student a top notch education but an experience that will benefit them for a lifetime.
Your child will have a safe place to study, work, and socialize at Georgia Southern, which offers a well-lit campus, emergency phones located at strategic points throughout campus, and emergency buttons in residence hall rooms. During the evening hours, a student can also contact University Public Safety for a walking escort.
Of course, no community is free from crime; a safe campus begins with your student. Remind your student of the basic safety practices of locking doors; don’t leave valuables or text books unattended in public spaces; walk with a friend or escort after dark; don’t leave valuables visible inside vehicles; and stay with their clothes while doing laundry.
The city of Statesboro exhibits small town charm. We have a historic town square and not a lot of traffic. There are lots of unique, fun things to do here, such as visit the waterpark or the historic Emma Kelly Theatre, eat in one of the locally owned restaurants, and visit the movie theater or miniature golf park. We’re also only three hours from Atlanta, two hours from Macon and Augusta, one hour from the beaches of Tybee and Hilton Head, and 45 minutes from Savannah!
In today’s increasingly globalized environment, it is important that students familiarize themselves with the world’s cultures. With minority groups making up 35% of our population – that’s over a quarter of our students – and almost all 50 states represented and more than 100 nations, students have a great opportunity to familiarize themselves with other cultures. Students can also pursue study abroad experiences in Asia, Latin America, the Caribbean, Russia, Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and many more!
Welcoming new students to Georgia Southern and assisting in their success is a priority. All new students are required to attend SOAR (Southern’s Orientation, Advisement, and Registration) where they will learn about becoming Eagles and be advised and register for classes (you’re encouraged to come as well!).
In August, Welcome Week kicks off with Operation Move-In, where students, faculty, and staff assist in moving new students into their residence hall. Events during Welcome Week may include a student organization fair, concert, outdoor movie, and lots of free food!
Also, all new students are required to take FYE 1220, an orientation and seminar class. These courses are designed to assist in the transition to Georgia Southern and connect new students with a professor in a small classroom environment.
From the Information Technology Building to the Zach S. Henderson Library, Georgia Southern is home to state-of-the-art facilities.
Students also enjoy the 215,000 square foot Recreation Activity Center – free for all students to use. There are eight basketball courts, five racquetball courts, an indoor track, an indoor soccer stadium, multipurpose, martial arts, and dance studios, a three story climbing wall, Olympic size indoor pool, sauna, whirlpool, outdoor pool, and more cardio and weight equipment than you could imagine.
Centennial Place residence hall features apartment style living, Cold Stone Creamery, Einstein Brother’s Bagels, an optical center, and the Eagle Print Shop.
