1. I am a legal resident of Georgia, but when checking my application status online, it lists me as out-of-state. Why am I listed as out-of-state?

There are a number of possible reasons as to why a student might have been listed as out-of-state. Here are some examples of why the student might have been listed as out-of-state:

  • He or she indicated on his or her application for admissions that he or she is currently attending or have attended any high school, college, or university outside the state of Georgia at any point and time.

  • He or she indicated on his or her application for admissions that his or her Driver’s License is from a state other than Georgia.

  • He or she indicated on his or her application for admissions that his or her vehicle(s) is/are registered in a state other than Georgia.

  • He or she indicated on his or her application for admissions that his or her voter registration is from a state other than Georgia.

  • He or she indicated on his or her application for admissions that he or she has a state income tax return in a state other than Georgia.

  • The student was counted as a tax dependent in a state other than Georgia (If the parents and/or legal guardian of the student currently do not live in Georgia and file taxes in the state of their legal residence).

  • The student indicated a response of “NO” for not currently possessing items such as a driver’s license, vehicle registration, voter registration, etc., for the state of Georgia.

2. How can I change my status to reflect that I am a Georgia resident?

To be considered for in-state tuition privileges, you, your parent(s) and/or legal guardian must have resided in the state of Georgia for a minimum of 12 consecutive months immediately prior to enrollment at Georgia Southern. It is up to the student to prove that he or she is a Georgia resident. To aid us in clarifying your residency status, the student will need to follow the appeal’s process by first completing the Petition for Classification as Georgia Resident for Tuition Purposes found at this link: http://students.georgiasouthern.edu/registrar/residency.htm Please submit as many of the requested items as possible. Once complete, please submit your petition to the Office of Admissions.

3a. I’m classified as an Out-of-State student now; can I become eligible for in-state residency at a later date?

3b. My family and/or I have just moved to the state of Georgia; when will I become eligible for in-state residency?

The student will need to submit the Petition for Classification as Georgia Resident for Tuition Purposes found at this link: http://students.georgiasouthern.edu/registrar/residency.htm. You must have lived in the state of Georgia for a minimum of 12 consecutive months before you can apply for residency. A copy of your (and/or your parent’s or spouse’s) GA driver's license, copy of the most recent copy of GA tax returns, and a copy of the student's birth certificate are a few of the documents that are required with the submission of the petition. Your eligibility will be determined by the residency officer of the Registrar’s Office.

4a. My parent(s) and/or legal guardian and I are currently not eligible for in-state residency, so what other options do I have to be eligible for in-state privileges?

4b. My parent(s) and/or I are currently active duty military personnel residing in the state of Georgia; am I eligible for in-state tuition?

Members of the following groups may be eligible for in-state tuition privileges regardless of length of residence in Georgia.  A waiver for in-state residency will need to be submitted.  The waiver forms can be found at http://students.georgiasouthern.edu/registrar/residency.htm

1. Families moving to Georgia;

PLEASE NOTE: These families must have already established some type of domicile in the state of Georgia PRIOR to the student’s enrollment at Georgia Southern to be eligible for this waiver; such things include a corporate job transfer from current place of residence to the state of Georgia, among others. Spouses ARE NOT eligible for this waiver.

2. Full-time teachers in Georgia public schools and their dependent children;

3. Full-time employees of the University System of Georgia, their spouses,
and their dependent children;

4. Active duty military personnel stationed in the State of Georgia and their dependents;

5. Active duty military personnel stationed outside the State of Georgia, but
maintaining legal residency within the state of Georgia; (Home state of record is Georgia and/or service member has been paying Georgia taxes on his or her LES-Leaves and Earnings Statement, for a minimum of 12 consecutive months PRIOR to the student’s enrollment at Georgia Southern.)

5. I’m classified as an in-state student now; if I leave the state of Georgia, how will this effect me?

If the student has been granted in-state residency, then he or she will CONTINUE to have in-state residency, UNLESS there is a break in enrollment at Georgia Southern for more than 1 year. He or she may have to go through the appeals process for the review of his or her residency within the state of Georgia.
