International SOAR

International SOAR Goes Virtual

Due to COVID-19, International SOAR has moved to a primarily virtual format, with some additional face-to-face sessions on Friday, August 14. For information on Georgia Southern’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic, visit our information page.

There is not a single date to complete Virtual SOAR.  It is is a combination of information, links, videos, live webinars, live small groups and Folio assignments, working together to provide you a flexible and engaging experience to prepare you to enroll at Georgia Southern. To get started with SOAR, you should visit GeorgiaSouthern.edu/VirtualSOAR. There is a video tutorial (top right corner) that walks you through how to complete everything available to be ready for the fall.

There are many live webinars and meetings that will be held via Zoom. Our calendar of events is here. Most events happen multiple times throughout the summer, and you can attend based on your calendar. Each item on the calendar has a description and link in it when you click on it. If a link isn’t there yet, we likely haven’t set it up yet or received that info from the department. If a session is full, check for a later one.

There are two live events that we HIGHLY RECOMMEND you participate in: SOAR Live and Academic Q&A.  They can be done in any order at any time and only have to be done once each. Family members can attend SOAR Live and Academic Q&A with their student. In the Academic Q&A, you choose the college that your major is in.

Statesboro Campus

SOAR Session Date for International Students | Fall 2020

  • International SOAR: Virtual + Face-to-Face Sessions on August 14, 2020

Arrival

Residence halls for international students will open on Wednesday, August 12.  Depending on when you arrive, you may need to spend the night at an airport hotel. A list of Savannah/Hilton Head Airport hotels can be found here. There is limited transportation between the airport and campus.  We recommend an Uber, Lyft or taxi for approximately $60 – $100 to the Statesboro campus and $30 – $50 for the Armstrong campus.

Reservation Process & Fees

Virtual SOAR registration is required to be connected with an academic advisor for course registration. If you have already signed up for SOAR, you don’t have to do anything different – we have moved you to Virtual SOAR already!

How to Register
To register for your Virtual SOAR, log into your Admission Status Check Page, click on the “Orientation” tab at the top of the page, and follow the link to our reservation website. You will then select your SOAR session – you should only see one – and pay the associated $25 fee.

What to Expect

  • Virtual SOAR will begin at GeorgiaSouthern.edu/VirtualSOAR. It will serve as a guide for you to prepare for enrollment. It also will direct you to complete SOAR 1000, your first “class” at Georgia Southern.
  • In addition, you have been added to the Newly Admitted International Student Folio Class. We are still working out all of the details, but rest assured – we are committed to ensuring you will be ready to begin classes and join a truly unique community of fellow Eagles. You can expect a mix of online resources, live webinars, online interactions with International SOAR Leaders, and in-person programming in August.
  • As an incoming international student, it is important to get connected with campus resources, meet the International Student Admissions and Programs (ISAP) team and get involved. On Friday, August 14, you will attend in-person sessions with other international students.  Additional information will be emailed to you about this day.

Tips & Reminders

  • All live sessions have multiple options to fit your schedule later in the summer, and many will be pre-recorded to watch at your own pace.
  • The $25 SOAR fee covers costs associated with online programming and staffing along with Weeks of Welcome events and your SOAR t-shirt.
  • If you previously registered for International SOAR and paid a higher fee, our staff will refund the difference to the credit card of the original payment. Please give us a few weeks to work through that process.
  • Family members and supporters are welcomed to review most virtual SOAR content.
