Preparing for Advisement at SOAR

This information is applicable for all on-campus students, regardless of primary campus.

Freshmen

About four weeks before your SOAR session, you’ll receive an email directing you to complete three modules in Folio, the online course management system that you’ll use for most of your classes at Georgia Southern. These modules will:

  • Help you learn about and explore majors available to you at Georgia Southern. Even if you are pretty sure about your major, we’ll ask you to confirm that choice.
  • Introduce you to advisement and how advisors will partner with you throughout your time in college.
  • Allow you to tell us about your course preferences and any incoming credit you have earned or may earn. Your advisor will use the information you provide to build your first semester schedule.

If you’re already registered for SOAR, you should be able to access the Folio modules now. To access Pre-Orientation, log into MyGeorgiaSouthern. On the left side of the screen, click on the “Folio” link under “Services.” Once in Folio, select the course titled “2019 Freshman Pre-Orientation” under the “My Courses” heading.

Your major is the most important factor in building your schedule. While you’ll have an opportunity to formally change your major through the pre-orientation modules, you can also do so through this form.

Transfer & Mature/Non-Traditional Students
As a transfer or non-traditional student, you will have the opportunity to be advised prior to SOAR, which will significantly speed up registration for you. In some cases, your advisor can register you for critical courses that are needed for your degree program in advance to ensure you will get appropriate classes. Your advisor will contact you to begin this process. Check the email address you provided on your application.

Please note: an accurate major is essential to advise and register you accurately. If you would like to change your major from the one you indicated on your application, do so here. Early advisement and registration only applies if you do not change majors during the SOAR session. If you change majors at SOAR, you will be required to attend advisement during the designated time for your new major.
